What is Halo Halo?

Halo-halo is a popular Filipino dessert that consists of a colorful mixture of various ingredients, creating a refreshing and sweet treat. The term "halo-halo" translates to "mix-mix" in English, which accurately describes the preparation method for this dessert.

Ingredients:

  • Shaved Ice
  • Sweetened Beans (e.g., red beans, garbanzo beans)
  • Sweetened Fruit (e.g., jackfruit, banana, coconut)
  • Jellies (e.g., agar cubes, coconut jelly)
  • Leche Flan (Filipino caramel custard)
  • Ube Halaya (Purple yam jam)
  • Nata de Coco (Coconut jelly)
  • Kaong (Sugar palm fruit)
  • Pinipig (Toasted rice flakes)
  • Evaporated Milk
  • Ice Cream (optional, but often used)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Cook sweetened beans, prepare fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube halaya beforehand. You can also buy some of these ingredients pre-prepared from an Asian grocery store to save time.

  2. Assemble: In a tall glass or bowl, start layering the ingredients. Begin with a layer of shaved ice at the bottom.

  3. Add Ingredients: Add a variety of sweetened beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, ube halaya, nata de coco, kaong, and pinipig on top of the shaved ice.

  4. Pour Milk: Drizzle evaporated milk generously over the halo-halo ingredients. The milk adds creaminess and binds the flavors together.

  5. Optional: Top with a scoop of ice cream for extra richness and flavor. Common choices include ube (purple yam) or cheese-flavored ice cream.

  6. Serve: Serve immediately with a long spoon and a wide straw for enjoying the layers of ingredients and shaved ice together.

  7. Mix: Before eating, stir the halo-halo to blend all the flavors and textures together.

  8. Enjoy!

Feel free to adjust the ingredients according to your preferences. Some people like to add additional toppings like toasted coconut flakes or cornflakes for extra crunch. The beauty of halo-halo is its versatility, so feel free to get creative with your combinations!
