Resources to Teach Filipino Holiday Traditions to Kids
Let us be your learning guide to a Paskong Pinoy!
Christmas holds an especially magical place in Filipino culture. For many Filipinos, the season is more than a holiday; it’s a time of togetherness and joy shared across families and communities. In true Filipino fashion, the celebration starts early--as soon as September! Known around the world as the earliest and longest Christmas season, the Philippines mark the beginning of festivities with elaborate lights and the unmistakable warmth of Filipino hospitality.
This rich cultural celebration is what inspired Flipp Family; together with our intern Hannah Arp, to create “The Filipino Christmas Activity Book”, a free, kid-friendly resource that introduces children to the traditions that make Christmas in the Philippines so special. Whether you’re sharing your heritage with your family or simply exploring global traditions, this activity book brings Filipino Christmas to life in a way that’s both fun and educational.
What’s Inside the Activity Book?
We carefully chose traditions that highlight the heart of a Filipino Christmas, and each section includes activities designed for elementary-aged children.
Here’s a closer look:
A Basic Overview of Filipino Christmas Traditions
Children will learn about the various Christmas traditions in this section and the sections to follow will expand on the learning a bit deeper.
Noche Buena
This cherished Christmas Eve feast is one of the biggest highlights of the season. In this section, we explore what Noche Buena is. The activities help children practice writing, creativity, and comprehension while learning about the importance of family bonding.
Filipino Parols
The parol: bright, colorful, star-shaped lanterns, is a symbol of hope and the Christmas spirit. This section teaches children what they represent and. The activities include drawing prompts and creative exercises that mimic the joy of making these iconic decorations.
Balikbayan Boxes
A beloved tradition for Filipinos living abroad, balikbayan boxes are filled with gifts, food, and thoughtful items sent to loved ones back home. Children learn about the meaning behind these boxes and how they symbolize love, sacrifice, and connection across distance.
Caroling & Karaoke
No Filipino Christmas is complete without music! In this section we learn about the important role of music in Filipino culture, especially during the holiday season. Lighthearted activities encourage rhythm and creative expression.
A Fun and Educational Experience
Each section of the activity book includes various engaging exercises that support different areas of child development:
- Reading and writing comprehension
- Basic math skills
- Social-emotional learning
- Cognitive development
- Art and creativity
- Literature and language building
While the activity book is designed with educational goals in mind, its main purpose is simple; to spark joy and celebrate Filipino culture in a way that families can enjoy together.
Help Us Grow the Tradition
We selected traditions that are meaningful to many Filipino families, but we know the Filipino Christmas experience is wonderfully diverse! If there’s a tradition your family cherishes, whether regional, religious, or personal, we’d love to hear it. Share your ideas through the suggestion form so we can consider them for future editions of the activity book.
Our Christmas Gift to Your Family
This activity book is free to access as our way of giving back to the community that continues to support us. It’s a small gift, but one filled with heart, made especially for the families, children, and educators who value Filipino culture and want to keep these traditions alive.
We hope this resource brings learning, laughter, and holiday magic to your home this Christmas season. Let the celebrations begin, Filipino style!
